A revolutionary new business for Thanet. Fresca Group, in partnership with specialist growers of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, will be producing salad crops in seven new large-scale glasshouses at the site in Kent, named Thanet Earth.
So far three of the seven glasshouses are constructed and fully operational, with their produce on sale through a number of retailers and in local independent outlets.
The 91-hectare site also houses a large packhouse and a specialist marketing company, Thanet Earth Marketing, to sell these salad crops, mainly to the UK supermarkets.
The crops are grown hydroponically, with cucumber and pepper production from February to November and tomato production for 52 weeks of the year in a light-equipped glasshouse. The heat and carbon dioxide needed for the complex comes from the UK's largest horticultural installation of Combined Heat & Power technology, which will also generate enough power once fully operational for the National Grid to power more than 50,000 homes.
